Lactic acidosis is a condition that is characterized by a buildup of lactic acid due to the poor removal of the acid from the blood. One of the most common causes of this condition is excessive exercise.
Lactic acidosis can also result from certain diseases, including sepsis, cancer, AIDS, respiratory failure and kidney failure, as stated by MedlinePlus. Metformin, a drug that is prescribed for diabetes treatment, can also lead to lactic acidosis. The build up of lactic acid in the blood occurs when the level of oxygen reduces. Common symptoms include nausea and fatigue. This condition can be treated by treating the health problem that is causing it.
