The largest federally protected areas shown on a map of Maine are the White Mountains National Forest in southwestern Maine and the Appalachian Trail, which runs northeast from the forest to central Maine. The White Mountain National Forest encompasses 750,852 acres along the New Hampshire border.
There are six designated federal wildlife preserves in the forest, including the Presidential Range/Dry River Wilderness, which covers an area of 27,000 acres. The Appalachian Trail runs for 282 miles through Maine before reaching its northern terminus at Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park near the town of Millinocket. The trail winds through the White Mountain National Forest for approximately 100 miles.
