Mount Unzen, located in Kyushu, Japan, is the name for a group of stratovolcanoes that includes Kinugasa, Fugen-dake and Kusenbu. Stratovolcanoes have a composition of layers of lava, tephra, pumice and ash. Its worst volcanic eruption happened in 1792 when a lava dome collapse caused a tsunami that killed 15,000 people. As of 2014, Mount Unzen is classified as dormant.
