As of 2015, the leading cause of death worldwide is heart disease, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization. Results are based on data from 2012 and 2013 because 2014 data has not been completely analyzed as of February 2015.
The age-adjusted death rate from heart disease in the U.S. was 169.8 per 100,000 in 2013. Worldwide, ischemic heart disease makes up about 13 percent of all deaths. In the U.S., overall mortality did not change much from 2012 to 2013, with cancer, stroke and respiratory disease among some of the other leading causes of death. Life expectancy at birth was 76.4 for males and 81.2 for females in 2013.
