It is legal to own a squirrel as a pet in the state of Florida, and a permit isn't required. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states that a cage for housing two squirrels must be 4 feet wide, 4 feet long and 6 feet high.
With each additional squirrel owned, the cage dimensions must be increased by 25 percent. Florida regulations also require the cage to be outfitted with a nest or shelter box that can house all the animals simultaneously, a raised climbing apparatus, items that provide physical stimulation and something that the squirrels can gnaw on. Items that provide physical stimulation can include balls, boxing or tubing, while gnawing items can be trees or logs.
