Legal restrictions on building swimming pools vary around the country, but some jurisdictions, particularly the drought-stricken regions of California, have recently enacted strict regulations governing swimming pool construction. Some towns and water districts prohibit the construction of new pools, as of 2015.

Other jurisdictions have enacted regulations that deal with the permitted size of pools that may be built or the amount of land that must surround a pool. In New York, for instance, a lot less than 25 feet wide must provide at least 3 feet of land on each side of the pool, while lots over 25 feet wide must allow for 5 feet of land around each side of the pool.
