In the field of science, the letters "DNA" stand for deoxyribonucleic acid. An organism's hereditary material is coded for and stored in its DNA. Most of an organism's DNA is stored within a cell?s nucleus to protect it from damage.
The composition of DNA consists of nucleotides. These nucleotides are constructed from a phosphate and sugar group with nitrogen bases. The double helix structure and the role of DNA in genetics was discovered in 1953 by scientists James D. Watson and Frances H.C. Crick. The discovery of DNA opened up the ability to screen for genetic abnormalities, assist with identifying deceased remains and create genetically modified foods.
