Squanto, also known by the name Tisquantum, aided the Plymouth pilgrim settlers as a interpreter and guide in the 1620s. He spent years as a slave in Spain after being kidnapped and brought to Europe by English explorer Thomas Hunt in 1614.
Born in 1580, Squanto and four companions suffered capture at the hands of Captain George Weymouth in 1605. Weymouth brought Squanto back to England; however, in 1614, he joined explorer John Smith and traveled back to the Massachusetts area. After Hunt kidnapped him that same year and returned him to Spain, Squanto escaped and spent time living with monks before returning once again to his homeland in 1619. He died in 1622 of a fever.
