Little Debbie Snack Cakes are made by McKee Foods, which was founded during The Great Depression by O.D. McKee and his wife, Ruth. Originally managed by O.D. and Ruth, the company is now run by second and third generation members of the McKee family.

Created in 1960, Little Debbie Snack Cakes is a product line of cookie and cake desserts that was named after O.D. and Ruth McKee's 4-year-old granddaughter, Debbie. The full-color illustration of the Little Debbie mascot, drawn by Pearl Mann, was based on a black-and-white photo of the child, taken by Olan Mills. However, she was depicted a few years older than she was in real life at the time, upon the McKees' request.
