What is llama hair called?

Llama hair is referred to as fiber while still on the animal and wool once it is shaved. The wool produced by a llama is very soft and is free of lanolin, a fatty, yellow, viscous substance found naturally in sheep's wool.

The llama is a two-coated mammal. The inner coat is a fine, downy undercoat that protects llamas from cold and heat temperatures. The outer coat, which is called the guard coat, is all straight hair. The guard coat allows moisture and debris to be shed. This second coat comprises of zero to 20 percent of the entire coat.
