How does lochia smell?

Lochia, the vaginal discharge following child birth, has a smell similar to that of a normal menstrual flow, according to HealthPages.org. It is a natural occurrence and normally not one for concern.
HealthPages.org explains that following the birth of a child, the lining of the uterus including blood, tissue and mucus is shed. This can be accompanied by mild to heavy bleeding that begins right after birth and usually dissipates within the same time frame as that of a normal menstrual cycle.
Any foul or abnormal smell not resembling that of a normal period should be reported to a doctor right away, as this can be a sign of infection.
