How long does a black eye last?

A black eye usually lasts for one to two weeks, according to Medical News Today. The actual healing time depends on an individual's health and immune system.
The blackness that forms around the eye is due to impact on capillaries and blood vessels around the eye that cause them to burst and leak blood into the surrounding tissue, explains Medical News Today. A black eye starts out black in color but eventually fades to dark blue and then to yellow-green. Most black eyes are not serious; however, anyone with blurred vision, blood in the ears or nose, or inability to move the eye should see a doctor immediately.
