The first flight was flown by Orville Wright and it lasted 12 seconds. A total of four flights were made on December 17, 1903, the longest of which lasted 59 seconds.
The first 12-second flight covered 120 feet. Orville Wright and his brother Wilbur continued flying that day, and the final 59-second flight took them a distance of 852 feet.
The Wright brothers began experimenting with flight in 1896, and over the course of their careers, they made more than 700 successful flights. The engine used in their plane was homemade, and their successful flights made them the first people to ever fly in a mechanical airplane.
