How long has Harris Teeter been in business?

In 1960, the first store under the name of Harris Teeter opened in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Harris Super Markets and Teeter Marts officially merged on February 1, 1960.

In 1936, W.T. Harris opened his first grocery store in Charlotte, North Carolina. He later opened his first supermarket in 1949. It featured air conditioning and stayed open until 9:00 PM on Friday nights, both of which made the store unique for the time.

Willis and Paul Teeter opened their first Teeter's Food Mart in Mooresville, North Carolina in 1939. Harris and Teeter first joined forces in 1958 to share a storage facility before merging in 1960. By 1963, there were 25 Harris Teeter stores in operation.
