According to WebMD, recovery from a ruptured spleen varies with the severity of the injury. Grades I and II spleen ruptures may not require surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy) and can heal on their own with medical supervision. However, splenectomies usually require four to six weeks of recovery.
Internal bleeding is the most dangerous risk of this injury due to a ruptured spleen, according to WebMD. When the spleen ruptures, the protective covering surrounding it, called the splenic capsule, breaks open. Other risks of the procedure include blood clotting, a hernia at the incision point, an infection at the incision point, lung collapse and inflammation of the pancreas.
