A mourning dove generally sits on her eggs in a nesting period of 12 to 15 days to encourage them to hatch. The clutch size is generally two eggs. The babies leave the nest in an additional 14 day period.
A mourning dove, also known as Zenaida macroura, makes its nest from twigs, grass and pine needles. The nest consists of woven materials constructed by the female of the species. The male procures the building materials and passes them to her while standing on her back.
These birds live in woods, fields, parks and other areas. They are not particular about their location. Their call is a mournful song.
