Recovery from ankle surgery, depending upon the type of surgery, can take four to nine months according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The patient can resume a majority of normal activities within three to four months .
Surgery and recovery are painful. In the initial stages, a cast is applied to help ensure proper healing and limit movement of the foot, states the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. During the first two weeks, the foot should be elevated to prevent excessive swelling. Doctors often recommend physical therapy to improve range of motion and strength of the ankle. Supportive shoes and braces help after removal of the cast as well.
