The probate process length varies, depending on the law of the state the probate is initiated in. The probate can take up to two years, if not longer, depending on the size of the estate and circumstances surrounding the estate.
Probate is a necessary process in order for the executor or administrator of an estate to properly dispose of the assets of a deceased person. Outstanding bills and taxes are also paid during the probate process. Small estates that don't have many debts or other obligations can be closed within six months, but larger estates that require the filing of state or federal tax returns can take longer than a year to wrap up.
