Since it sticks to brain receptors for an extended amount of time, Suboxone can block opiates for up to three days, according to The National Alliance of Advocates for Buprenorphine Treatment. According to the organization, if opiates are consumed during this period, they have little to no effect.
According to NAABT, Suboxone binds to opioid receptors within the brain, essentially preventing those receptors from binding with ingested opioids. NAABT states that the receptors are fooled into thinking they are satisfied, which hinders cravings. According to PsychCentral, the drug, which was approved by the FDA in 2002, has a 40 to 60 percent success rate.
