According to ABC News, skin often starts to come off in sheets a few days after a sunburn. This process is referred to as peeling, and it can last for weeks. While the signs of peeling diminish after a few weeks, it takes six weeks for burns to heal.
Since peeling can lead to scarring and infection, it is very important to keep the area clean, dry, moisturized and treated with antibacterial creams during the healing process. Additional sun exposure should be avoided at all costs by wearing protective clothing and sunscreen. Peeling skin can be removed by soaking in a warm bath.
