How long is the term of office for a federal court judge?

Federal judges who serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, in the federal appellate courts or in district courts do not have a set term of office. They are allowed to serve as long as they like, provided that they remain personally and professionally responsible.

Congress may remove a federal judge through the impeachment process if it is determined that the judge is no longer fair and impartial. Judges must file financial disclosure statements each year so that the public can determine if judges have a personal monetary reason to make a particular ruling. Federal judges also are not supposed to campaign for candidates or request contributions for any organization.
