According to NBC News, the duration of storage for text messages is dependent upon the mobile carrier. Verizon stores text message details for up to one year, although the content itself lasts between 3 to 5 days.
AT&T retains text message details between 5 to 7 years but does not store the content. Sprint holds the text message details for up to 18 months, without the content. Finally, T-Mobile keeps text message details for up to five years, minus the content. Other major carriers operate in similar manners. Some also store text message details according to the specific device and wireless plan of the user.
