Irving Penn was Vogue's fashion photographer from 1943 to 1993. His photographs have appeared on over 150 Vogue covers. Moving to New York soon after finishing his degree, he began work as a freelance designer and illustrator. After buying a camera, he was soon photographing Manhattan storefronts and signs.
In 1943, Mr. Penn was offered a job as assistant to the art director, and his first task was to supervise the design of Vogue covers. Unable to interest the staff photographers in his sketches, he took the photos himself. His first cover appeared on October 1, 1943 and was a still-life featuring accessories.
