The Internal Revenue Service issues refunds in less than 21 days to nine out of 10 taxpayers, according to its website. Tax returns that require additional review often take additional time to process.

Taxpayers may contact the IRS via phone or walk into an IRS Service Center to inquire about refunds if 21 days has passed since filing their returns electronically, notes IRS.gov. In addition, IRS.gov offers taxpayers a tool called Where’s My Refund that allows taxpayers to quickly check the status of refunds within 24 hours of electronic submission or within four weeks after mailing paper returns to the IRS.
