How long do you have to wait after filing to track your refund status?

Wait 24 hours after the IRS has received an electronic e-filed tax return or four weeks after filing a paper return to check the status of the refund on that return. The IRS offers a tracking tool on its website as well as a mobile app for checking refund status.

Tax returns must be processed and approved before an exact date can be set for delivery of a refund. Most refunds are issued within 21 days of the return being received; however, refunds may take longer during peak tax seasons. Refund status as displayed on the IRS website and app is updated once a day, usually at night.
