Yorkshire terriers, known as Yorkies, live an average of 12 to 15 years. The small dogs often suffer from health problems including bronchitis, easily upset stomachs, eye infections and tooth decay. They also tend to have spine problems and can easily herniate disks.
Yorkies have fragile bones, which they sometimes fracture. Because of their small size, females sometimes have problems delivering puppies. The toy-sized dogs weigh about 7 pounds. They are referred to as teacup Yorkshire terriers when they weigh less than 4 pounds. Yorkies of less than 4 pounds sometimes have additional health problems. Yorkies have silky, long coats that require frequent brushing.
