What is longboarding?

Longboarding is a term used to describe the act of skateboarding on a longboard. Longboards are similar to skateboards, except that longboards are longer. While the average skateboard ranges between 28 and 32 inches long, the average longboard ranges between 32 and 60 inches long.

Because of their larger size, longboards tend to be heavier and more stable than skateboards. Many longboarders say that this heaviness and stability results in a smoother ride, making the longboard ideal for traveling long distances. Due to the relatively similar appearance of longboarding and surfing, many have referred to the activity as "sidewalk surfing."
