To loosen a ratchet strap, pull and hold the release mechanism to unlock the ratchet. Fully open the ratchet assembly to release the tension on the strap, and then tug on the adjustable strap beneath the slack to loosen it completely.

Once the strap is adjusted or loosened, activate the release mechanism again to return the ratchet assembly to the closed position. Depending on the brand, the release mechanism may be solid, or it may contain a hole or bar for gripping. There are two basic types of ratchet straps: single-loop and two-piece.
