According to Health Research Funding, a diagnosis of lumbar radiculopathy under ICD 9 refers to damage to the discs between the vertebrae in the spine. The damage may be due to acute trauma or to deterioration of the disc. Symptoms include pain radiating down the leg from the back.
The Centers for Disease Control explains that ICD 9 refers to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision. This classification system is used to assign standardized codes to diagnoses and procedures at hospitals in the United States. These codes are used for medical billing and research.
The American Medical Association says that ICD 10 will replace ICD 9 as of October 2015.
