Research is still needed into whether or not lutein supplements actually improve eyesight, states WebMD. However, as of 2015, a few studies suggest that it may improve eyesight in dim light or where glare is present.
Lutein is a very potent antioxidant, according to WebMD, and it is found in large concentrations around the eye, especially around the lens and retina. It protects the eyes from high-energy light, such as ultraviolet light. As of 2015, current studies show that supplements containing lutien and zeaxanthin can slow the process of macular degeneration, an age-related disease, if a person already has it.
