Compact bone is the outer layer of a bone such as the tibia or fibula. Compact bone is also referred to as cortical bone. The compact bone is shaped like a cylinder and is extremely hard.

Compact bone is one of the three layers of a bone. The center of the bone is filled with bone marrow. Surrounding this is the cancellous bone, and the final layer is the compact bone covering. There are thousands of holes in the bone in which nerves and blood vessels run. The blood vessels supply nutrients and oxygen to the bone. The compact bone is made up of mostly calcium and minerals, and it has no pain sensations.
