Magnolias grow in tropical, subtropical and temperate climates. Magnolias are native to North, Central and South America, as well as Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.
With over 200 different species of magnolias available, there are varieties that can thrive in virtually any climate. Magnolias do best in United States Department of Agriculture hardiness zones four through nine. The trees prefer full sun to partial shade. Though they readily adapt to loamy, sandy and clay soils, the plants grow best in soils with ample drainage. For optimal growth, soil should be of neutral acidity. However, they are capable of withstanding slightly acidic or slightly alkaline soils.
