The format of mailing addresses is different in almost every country. Though similar basic components, such as street number, city and postal code, are included in addresses in almost all geographic locations, the order of these elements and which address line they appear on varies.

For example, apartment addresses in Russia and many other former Soviet republics often require a floor number and building entrance number, in addition to the apartment number that is the sole requirement for most U.S. apartments. In the United Arab Emirates, all mail is received through post office boxes, so a PO Box number must be included in every address.
