Some major banks that offer online checking accounts include Capital One, Nationwide and Ally Bank. Capital One and Ally Bank offer free checking, but Nationwide requires debit card use and direct deposit to avoid a fee.
Capital One's e-checking account, 360 Checking, features no monthly fee and few other fees for the use of the account. It allows customers to scan and deposit checks through a mobile app and pays interest on balances up to $50,000.
Ally Bank offers virtually the same service as Capital One and calls it Ally Interest Checking. Nationwide requires either a minimum balance of $10,000 or at least eight direct deposit or debit card transactions per month to avoid the $8 monthly fee.
