To create homemade bed bug repellent, make an infusion of mint and water. The supplies you need for this 15-minute project are distilled water, fresh mint leaves, a liquid measuring cup, a spray bottle, mild soap, a kitchen towel, a chef's knife, a cutting board, a funnel, a slotted spoon, a medium pot and a stove.
- Wash the bottle
Take the top off of the spray bottle, and wash both parts in hot, soapy water. Set them on a clean kitchen towel.
- Heat the water
Set a medium pot over high heat, and pour in four cups of distilled water.
- Prepare the mint leaves
Rinse the mint leaves in cold tap water. Lay them on a cutting board, and chop them coarsely with a chef's knife.
- Drop the mint into the water
Add the chopped mint to the water pot. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, and then turn the heat down to medium. Simmer the infusion for 10 minutes.
- Strain the infusion
Turn off the stove, and move the pot to a cool burner. Set the spray bottle next to the stove, and stick the funnel inside. To keep the mint leaves out of the bottle, place a large slotted spoon along the pot's bottom edge. Slowly pour the minted water through the spoon and into the funnel, and then discard the leaves.
- Cap the bottle
Remove the funnel, and cap the bottle. Use the spray immediately, and store the leftovers in the refrigerator. Use them within one week.
