Make nectar for orioles by combining water and sugar. Place the nectar in a special oriole feeder and replenish the nectar supply regularly. This takes only a few minutes, and requires a bowl, water, sugar and an oriole nectar feeder.
- Combine the ingredients
In a bowl, combine 1 part sugar with 4 parts water.
- Mix the nectar
Mix the ingredients until the sugar dissolves in the water.
- Purchase an oriole nectar feeder
Purchase an oriole feeder, as the typical hummingbird feeder is too small for these larger birds. Make sure that the ports and bases are a bright color, such as orange, in order to attract the orioles.
- Install ant moats
Buy a feeder with ant moats or install your own. This keeps insects attracted to nectar away from the sugar water.
- Fill the feeder with the nectar
Pour the nectar in the oriole feeder.
- Place the feeder in a good location
Place the feeder in a location away from pesticides and close to nectar-producing flowers and berry bushes that also attract orioles.
- Replenish the nectar regularly
Every two or three days, clean out the nectar feeder with hot water. Replenish the ports with fresh nectar, discarding any remaining nectar during the cleaning.
