How many Americans have tattoos?

According to a January 2012 Harris Poll, one in every five adults in the United States has at least one tattoo. The poll also indicated that people in the Western region of the country tend to have more tattoos.

Twenty-six percent of adults in the Western U.S. have at least one tattoo, while only 21 percent of people living in the Eastern U.S. and 21 percent of Americans residing in the Midwest have a tattoo. Only 18 percent of those who reside in the American South have tattoos, according to the Harris Poll. The 2012 poll also indicated that women are more likely to have tattoos than men. Among those who were polled, 86 percent said they did not regret getting their tattoo.
