As of 2012, the state of California was responsible for 55 electoral votes, the highest of any state. This total is set to remain the same through the 2020 election.
California has held the most electoral votes of any state since 1972, when it passed New York. Since the state's founding, it has gained electoral votes in every census. The total has been 40 or more since the early 1960s. In recent elections, California has been Democratic, voting for this party's candidate in the previous six elections. Similar to most other states, California doesn't divide its electoral votes. The winner of the state's popular vote gets all 55 electoral votes.
