On average, patients with diabetes should eat approximately 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal, states the American Diabetes Association. However, each patient is unique and may require more or fewer carbohydrates with each meal.

The number of carbohydrates that diabetic patients can consume is based on their activity level, their overall health and their medication, states the American Diabetes Association. Patients who exercise frequently may be able to eat more grams of carbohydrates than patients who are sedentary. Patients should watch their blood glucose levels closely and confer with their doctors to determine the right number of carbohydrates for them.
