Sixteen colors can be referenced by name when using HTML 4.01. The colors are black, silver, gray, white, red, maroon, purple, fuchsia, lime, green, olive, yellow, blue, navy, aqua and teal.

Each color value is assigned a specific hexadecimal number with a hash mark in front of it. For example, "#008080" refers to the color teal. These 16 common colors can also be referred to be name in HTML code. For example, to create a green background, instead of using "#008000," a programmer can just write the word "green."
