There are around 210 known goat breeds in the world as of 2015. Most of the world's 450 million goats, and the most diverse number of species, live in Asia and the Middle East.

Goats were one of the first species of animals domesticated by humans; archaeological evidence suggests goat herding dates back at least 9000 years.

Modern domestic goat breeds vary greatly in size. Adult goats may weigh anywhere from 25 to 275 pounds, depending on their breed. Goats tend to live for approximately 11 years. The primary products derived from goats are milk, cheese and wool. Goat meat is a popular food in some regions of the world.
