How many different types of tuna fish are there?

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there are five species of tuna. Some species live in the Pacific Ocean, while others are native to the Atlantic.

Both of the oceans are home to their own version of the five species: albacore, bigeye, bluefin, yellowfin and skipjack. Albacore is a mild-tasting fish with a steak-like texture. Most of the commercial fishing for bigeye is done in the Pacific. There are regulations that control Atlantic bluefin tuna fishing, but as of March 2014, that is not the case for the Pacific variety. Yellowfin tuna are very popular among commercial fishermen. Skipjack is one of the varieties canned as "light tuna."
