How many feathers does a turkey have?

Adult turkeys have anywhere between 5,000 to 6,000 feathers on their body. These feathers are arranged in unique patterns, known as feather tracts. The turkeys' feathers are responsible for keeping them warm, helping them attract a mate during mating season and even aiding them in flying up to speeds of over 55 miles per hour.

Each wing will typically possess 10 primary feathers and 18 to 19 secondary feathers. Primary feathers tend to be stiffer than the secondary ones. In addition, turkeys typically have 19 quill feathers on their tail.

Turkey feathers are unique in their coloration, and can exhibit colors like green, red, gold, black and even bronze.
