The World Health Organization suggests that adults should only consume up to 25 grams of sugar a day. This is equal to about 5 percent of the daily caloric intake for someone with a normal body mass index.
The average American eats about 3 pounds of sugar a week. This high consumption level can lead to serious health issues, including weight gain and an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases. The 25 grams suggested is equal to 6 teaspoons of sugar. A single can of soda contains an average of 40 grams of sugar. The suggested intake level applies to added sugars and natural sugars as well, such as those contained in honey and fruit juices. Sugars from natural produce are not applied to the limit.
