How many high school credits are needed to graduate?

High school credit requirements are set at the state and district levels and vary between schools. An average of 24 to 28 credits is required by most schools at the time of graduation or six to seven credits in a given academic year.
For example, states such as California and Washington set a minimum number of credits required to graduate for all high school students. State law may also mandate what academic subjects students must study in order to earn credits. However, both states also allow individual school districts to require additional credits and mandate additional subjects for students attending schools in the area.
