There can be a maximum of 16 horses in the field at the Belmont Stakes, the third and final event in horse racing's Triple Crown. The Belmont Stakes takes place annually in Belmont Park, New York, usually on a Saturday between June 5 and 11.
The inaugural Belmont Stakes was run in 1886, and the race has been held every year since, with the exception of 1911 and 1912 when Belmont Park was closed due to anti-gambling laws in New York.
As of 2015, the total purse for the Belmont Stakes is $1.5 million, with $800,000 going to the winner, $280,000 to 2nd place and $150,000 for the 3rd place finisher.
