The element neon has exactly 10 neutrons. The element also has 10 protons and 10 electrons. It has an atomic number of 10 and an atomic mass of 20.18 atomic mass units.
Neon is classified as a noble gas and is found in group 18 on the periodic table. In total, there are six noble gases; they include helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon and radon. All of these elements are inert, meaning that they are not chemically active because they each have a full octet of valence electrons and an oxidation number of zero. These elements are completely stable and are not found in many common chemical reactions.
