There is no set number of annual new releases of Air Jordan shoes, but Nike releases roughly 140 to 150 new annual variations of Air Jordan shoes. Nine to 14 new releases occur each month, with intermittent holiday or commemorative releases.

There are 28 generations of Air Jordan shoes. The signature high-top sneakers bearing the Jordan name debuted in 1984, and Nike began releasing successive generations in 1987. Past designers have included Bruce Kilgore and Tinker Hatfield. The Japanese flag and Ferrari have been design inspirations for previous releases.

New releases sometimes encompass aesthetic reiterations of previous generations, such as the Air Jordan 5 Retro in white, metallic silver and black, which was released in April 2015.
