A dollar bill weighs approximately .04 ounce, the equivalent of one gram. The dollar bill is also referred to as a note. U.S. paper money is printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
The first dollar bills were issued by the Federal Government in 1862. These first notes did not have George Washington on them, but rather were printed with a portrait Salmon P. Chase, the Secretary of the Treasury. George Washington's portrait began being featured on the dollar bill in 1869. The Federal Reserve started issuing notes in 1963, and the fronts featuring George Washington and the backs showing the Great Seal have remained unchanged since.
