The 42-inch-square ISO pallets are most the commonly used for intercontinental shipping in 20-foot ISO containers, although there are a wide variety of other pallet sizes available for shipping.

ISO containers are used for intermodal shipping, meaning the same container can be loaded onto a container ship, then on a rail car and finally on a chassis to be delivered by a truck. The advantage of this design is that the cargo in the container never needs to be unloaded by hand until it reaches its final destination.
